01 — Region

Four stages decide the outcome of an orthopaedic operation, and three of them happen outside the theatre.

Examination first, imaging second. X-rays and scans are read with you in the room, so you can see what is worn, torn or displaced before anything is recommended.

Implant sizing, alignment and instrument trays are decided before the day of surgery, so theatre time is spent operating rather than deciding.

Keyhole where it is enough, open where it is necessary. Sterile discipline, controlled technique and a team that has done the sequence many times together.

Movement begins within hours wherever it is safe. Physiotherapy, pain control and honest milestones carry the result out of the theatre and back into daily life.

Nobody remembers the implant. They remember the first walk to the gate, the first flight of stairs, the first morning that did not have to be planned around pain. So recovery is staged like the surgery itself — with dates, targets, and someone watching the leg at every step.
Within hours of surgery you are sitting up, then on your feet with a frame and a physiotherapist at your elbow. Early movement is not bravery — it is how stiffness, clots and chest complications are prevented.

Sutures out, swelling settling. The work moves to range and quadriceps control: straight-leg raises, heel slides and a resistance band that gets a little harder every visit.

Day 15, week six, month three, then once a year. Every review checks the same four things — range, gait, night pain and X-ray alignment — so progress is measured against your own last visit, never guessed.
Age, joint, occupation and what your home actually looks like all change the plan. Stairs at the entrance, a squatting toilet, a farm or a factory floor — the protocol is built around your day, not handed out as a photocopy.
